Domaine Coteaux des Margots Bourgogne Aligoté “La Pie‑Rouette” 2024 | Mâconnais, Burgundy

The Wine 

“La Pie-Rouette” roughly translates to “the wandering magpie”, a playful name that suits a wine this bright, crunchy and full of energy. There's loads of fresh green apple, zesty citrus and wet stone minerality. You can feel the limestone-rich vineyards in the wine, and these come from sites around Pierreclos. Hand harvested and fermented with wild yeasts before a short élevage the aim here is to make a crushable aligote, they nailed the brief.

The Producer 

This charming domaine is nestled in the limestone rich hills of Pierreclos - the very southern tip of Burgundy, just 5km from where Beaujolais begins. The Duroussay’s, now with genial son Pierre at the helm, farm their 15 hectares of vines sunstainably using “lutte raisonnee” methods, and Pierre has begin the conversion to organic certification. Grapes are hand-picked at good acid levels and everyting else is relatively simple - wild yeats, cold ferments and a little time in concrete to round things off. Not an oak barrel in sight here, the focus is very much on freshness and finesse.
