The Wine
One of the Loire’s most revered Cabernet Franc sites. Clos Rougeard’s legendary “Le Bourg” and “Les Poyeux” bottlings helped cement the vineyard’s reputation among both collectors and sommeliers.
Silky, layered Franc that's built to age, “Les Poyeux” takes its name from the site’s soft, powdery limestone soils, which give the wine its signature perfume and energy. Sourced from a prized south-west facing parcel planted in the 1950s on the north-western side of Le Bas Poyeux, neighbouring plots from big guns like Thierry Germain and Antoine Sanzay.
Hand harvested, hand sorted and fully destemmed before indigenous yeast fermentation in stainless steel. Gentle extraction over 22 days followed by 18 months élevage in amphora and seasoned Bordeaux barriques.
The Producer
Young couple Caroline and Herve started this project in 2019 when the took over a sprawling 16 HA estate in Varrains. 33 individual plots with an average age of 40 years. All farmed organically with certification coming in 2023. The standout being a prized 1.8 HA parcel in the legendary Les poyeux vineyard, planted in 1950. Their vines are wedged in between none other than Thierry Germain and Antoine Sanzay. There is also a great "village" wine which is very classically styled and comes from 4 separate parcels, plus a superb Saumur blanc which is made in very small volumes.
